Different types of survey chains. ( Short Note)
1. Metric Chain
- A chain consists of different parts – i.e. brass ring (every 1m), swivel joint, link, ring, Handel, tally.
- Each Link is made of galvanized mild steel of 4 mm dia.
- Brass handle made of dia. 6mm bar.
- According to IS: 1492-1972, surveying chains are four different type
5 m - 25 links
10 m – 50 links
20 m – 100 links
30 m – 150 links
20-meter chain:
- Tallies are provided at every 5 m (25 links)
- Brass ring provide at every 1 m
- Middle tally has two teeth (10m Tally)
30-meter chain:
- Tallies are provided at every 5 m (25 links)
- Brass ring at every 1 m
- Middle tally has three teeth
2. Gunter’s Chain:
- Also called the surveyor’s chain
- It is a non-metric chain
- Length is 66 ft (20.12 m)
- Total links 100
- Each link length is 0.66 ft (20.12 cm)
- Used for: for measuring distance in miles and furlong
- 10 chain = 1 furlong
3. Revenue Chain
- It is a non-metric chain
- Length = 33 ft
- Total Link = 16 links
- Each link = 62.87 cm
- Used for: Cadastral survey
4. Engineer’s Chain:
- Length = 100 ft
- Total link = 100
- Each link = 1 ft (30.48 cm)
- Tally provide at every 10 ft
- Used for: previously used in every engineering works
5. Steel band or Band Chain:
- Consist of 16 mm width steel ribbon
- It may be 20 m and 30 m
- It has a brass handle
- It is graduated m, dm, cm on one side and 0.2 m mark on the other side.
- Used for: more accurate project work.
