Aspect

Q. What is the Aspect? What is the importance of Aspect in building planning?

Definition:
Aspect refers to the arrangement or positioning of different rooms of a building with respect to the direction of sun, prevailing wind, rainfall, and climatic conditions so that the occupants get maximum comfort throughout the year. Proper aspect ensures that each room receives suitable sunlight and ventilation according to its function.

Explanation:
In building planning, aspect plays a vital role in deciding the orientation of rooms. Since the sun’s movement and wind direction vary with seasons, rooms should be located in such a way that they receive desirable sunlight and avoid excessive heat. For example, in tropical countries like India, protection from harsh afternoon sun is very important.

Importance of Aspect:
Aspect ensures adequate natural lighting inside the building, which reduces the need for artificial lighting during daytime. It also provides proper cross-ventilation, improving indoor air quality and maintaining a healthy environment. Correct aspect helps in maintaining thermal comfort, thereby reducing the use of fans, coolers, and air conditioners, which ultimately lowers energy consumption and electricity costs.

Importance of Aspect (Point-wise)

1.      Ensures adequate natural lighting inside the building.

2.      Reduces the need for artificial lighting during daytime.

3.      Provides proper cross-ventilation.

4.      Improves indoor air quality and maintains a healthy environment.

5.      Maintains thermal comfort inside the building.

6.      Reduces the use of fans, coolers, and air conditioners.

7.      Lowers overall energy consumption and electricity costs.

Examples:
Living rooms are generally placed facing east or north-east to receive pleasant morning sunlight. Bedrooms are located on the south or west side but protected with sunshades or verandahs to avoid intense afternoon heat. Kitchens are often placed in the east so that smoke and heat can escape easily and morning sunlight can enter.

Conclusion:
Thus, proper aspect is an essential principle of building planning that ensures comfort, health, energy efficiency, and climatic suitability of a structure.
